The Indian bedroom occupies a unique place in the home — it is at once the most private space and the most personal canvas. Unlike the living room, which is curated for guests, the bedroom is designed purely for the people who inhabit it. And yet, in India, the bedroom has historically received the least design attention.
At Intero, we believe your bedroom deserves as much care and intention as any room in your home. It is the first space you see in the morning and the last before you sleep. Its design directly influences the quality of your rest, your sense of wellbeing, and your mood every single day.
"Your bedroom should be the most honest room in your home — designed not for anyone else, but entirely for you."
The Challenge of the Indian Bedroom
Designing bedrooms in India comes with unique constraints. Space is often limited — particularly in apartments across Gurgaon, Noida, and Delhi. Storage demands are high — Indian families tend to own more textiles, garments, and personal items than their Western counterparts. And the climate demands specific considerations for ventilation and material choice.
At the same time, the Indian home holds enormous cultural weight. Many families want their bedrooms to feel rooted in Indian aesthetics — warm, rich, textured — while also meeting contemporary expectations for functionality and sophistication.
1. Start With the Bed — The Undisputed Centrepiece
In Indian bedroom design, the bed is everything. It should be positioned thoughtfully — ideally with the headboard against a solid wall, never under a window, and not directly facing the entry door (a principle aligned with both Vastu and common sense).
For the headboard, we love upholstered designs in rich fabrics — deep teal velvet, warm terracotta linen, or classic ivory — which add visual softness and acoustic warmth to the room. A well-chosen headboard can anchor the entire room's design direction.
2. Warm Your Palette With Earth Tones and Heritage Hues
Indian interiors have always gravitated toward warm, earthy tones — and for good reason. Terracotta, saffron, deep ochre, warm ivory, forest green, and midnight indigo all create a sense of warmth and rootedness that cooler, more clinical palettes cannot replicate.
Our recommended approach for Indian bedrooms:
- Walls: Warm off-white or a single feature wall in a deep, saturated tone (dusty rose, slate teal, or charcoal)
- Textiles: Layered bedding in complementary earth tones — start neutral, then layer warmth through cushions and throws
- Accents: Brass or antique gold hardware, jute or cane elements, handwoven textiles
3. Solve Storage Beautifully — Not Just Functionally
In India, adequate storage is not a luxury — it is a necessity. But storage does not have to be ugly. In fact, a beautifully designed wardrobe or storage wall can become one of the most striking elements of a bedroom.
We love floor-to-ceiling wardrobes with integrated lighting, push-to-open mechanisms (no handles for a cleaner look), and mixed finishes — perhaps a matte finish paired with a satin lacquer centre panel for visual interest. Under-bed storage, ottomans with internal compartments, and bedside tables with generous drawers all help manage the real storage demands of Indian households without cluttering the visual space.
"Good storage is invisible storage — when it works perfectly, you stop noticing it and simply enjoy the room."
4. Layer Lighting for Mood and Function
Bedroom lighting in India is almost always underdesigned. The solution is straightforward: add at least three layers.
- Ambient: A recessed cove or indirect ceiling light — soft, dimmable, and never harsh
- Task: Bedside reading lamps or wall-mounted sconces with individual controls for each side of the bed
- Mood: Warm LED strips behind the headboard, under the bed frame, or inside display niches — these create a glow that transforms the room at night
Every bedroom we design has a master dimmer switch by the door and bedside dimmer controls. It is a small investment that transforms the entire experience of the room.
5. Add One Handcrafted Piece That Tells Your Story
The element that distinguishes truly memorable bedrooms from merely beautiful ones is always something handcrafted, personal, or heritage-rooted. It could be a vintage mirror with a hand-carved frame found in a Rajasthan market. A block-printed bedcover from Jaipur. A small bronze sculpture on the bedside. A set of hand-painted ceramic vases.
Whatever it is, it should feel genuinely yours — not purchased from a catalogue, but chosen because it resonates with who you are and where you come from. This single element will give your bedroom a soul that no amount of expensive furniture can replicate.
