5 Luxury Living Room Ideas for Indian Homes in 2024

The Indian drawing room has undergone a quiet revolution over the past decade. What was once dominated by heavy rosewood furniture and ornate brass accents has evolved into a more considered, layered aesthetic — one that honours Indian sensibilities while embracing global design principles.

At Intero, we have designed living rooms across Delhi NCR — from compact 2BHK apartments in Noida to sprawling 5BHK villas in Greater Faridabad. Through this experience, we have identified five ideas that consistently elevate a living room from ordinary to extraordinary.

"Luxury is not about spending more — it is about choosing better. Every decision, made with total clarity."

1. Embrace Warm Neutrals as Your Base Palette

The most timeless luxury living rooms we have designed share one trait: a restrained, warm neutral base. Think warm whites, soft creams, aged linens, and earthy taupes — not clinical whites or harsh greys.

In the Indian context, warm neutrals work exceptionally well because they:

  • Pair beautifully with natural materials like jute, cane, and teak wood
  • Make rooms feel larger and more airy — crucial in apartments
  • Provide a calm backdrop that allows statement pieces to shine
  • Age gracefully and never feel dated

Layer this base with gold accents, deep navy or forest green cushions, and warm-toned art to create depth without overwhelming the senses.

2. Invest in One Statement Sofa — Then Build Around It

In Indian homes, the sofa is the centrepiece of the living room. It is where guests are seated, where family gathers on evenings, and often the first piece the eye falls on when entering the room.

Our advice: invest significantly in a single, beautifully crafted sofa in a premium fabric — velvet, bouclé, or a high-quality linen blend. Choose a profile that is elegant but practical, with cushions that actually invite you to sit.

Then build the rest of the room around it. The sofa sets the tone; everything else is in service of it. A simple rule: if the sofa is rich and plush, keep the coffee table sleek and simple. If the sofa is minimal and linear, you can afford a more ornate side table.

3. Layer Your Lighting — Three Levels Minimum

Lighting is the most transformative and most underutilised element in Indian home design. Most homes rely entirely on a single overhead fitting — and then wonder why the room feels flat and uninviting.

Luxury living rooms always have at least three layers of lighting:

  1. Ambient: The general overhead light — a statement chandelier, recessed cove lighting, or a large pendant that provides overall illumination.
  2. Task/Accent: Floor lamps, table lamps, and wall sconces that create pools of warm light in corners and on surfaces.
  3. Decorative: Backlit panels, under-shelf LED strips, or illuminated art that adds visual drama after dark.

The key is using warm white bulbs (2700–3000K) throughout. Cool white light destroys the atmosphere of any room, however beautiful the furniture.

4. Bring in Natural Materials & Handcrafted Accents

Nothing communicates luxury quite like the authentic texture of natural materials. In Indian living rooms, we love incorporating:

  • Solid teak or sheesham wood for consoles, side tables, and TV units
  • Handwoven dhurries or Persian-inspired rugs to anchor the seating area
  • Cane-woven accents in chairs, pendants, or storage pieces — a beautiful nod to Indian craft traditions
  • Marble or stone surfaces for coffee tables and decorative pedestals
  • Handcrafted pottery and brass sculptures as art objects

These materials connect the room to India's rich craft heritage while providing the texture and depth that makes a room feel truly luxurious.

"The best Indian interiors feel expensive not because of their price tags, but because of their authenticity and intention."

5. Create a Focal Point & Frame It Deliberately

Every great living room has a focal point — a single element that commands attention and around which the rest of the room is oriented. In many Indian homes this defaults to the television. We encourage our clients to be more intentional.

Your focal point could be a wall of curated art, a dramatic fireplace surround (even decorative), a built-in bookcase with integrated lighting, or a feature wall in a rich, deep colour or textured wallpaper.

Whatever you choose, frame it deliberately. Symmetry on either side — matching lamps, flanking artworks, twin plants — creates a sense of calm and intention that immediately elevates the room's perceived quality.
